This sector covers nearly all Spanish producers and exporters of fresh asparagus, of both white and green varieties.

Spanish asparagus production for the fresh produce market is localed primarily in the regions of Andalusia and Extremadure. More specifically, white asparagus is harvested in Western Andalusia, Jaen and the two provinces of Extremadure, whereas green asparagus is a product grown almost exclusively in the province of Granada, around the Huetor-Tajar area.

Good soil and a mild climate but, above all, the high degree of professional expertise prevailing in the sector are the principal reasons for the excellent quality of the asparagus grown in Southern Spain, the first to reach European markets early in the season.

The main market for this product is in the EU – where Germany, France, Holland, England, Italy and Belgium are the largest consumers – as well as in Switzerland.
